Prieto Picudo is a rare, dark-skinned red wine grape from León*, northern Spain, used to produce both rosés and deeply coloured reds. It can be found as a single-variety wine or blended with Tempranillo or Mencia.
Little of this variety is grown outside Spain. It seems well adapted to hot climates, thus it is a feasible variety for many Australian regions.
Prieto Picudo wines are noted for their high alcohol and acidity, balanced by intense aromatics of licorice and blackberries.
Bassham in the Riverland region of South Australia are pioneers of this variety.
These varieties, now used in Australia, all originated in Spain or Portugal
