Falanghina In Australia

Falanghina was introduced into Australia from Campania in the 2010s. It shows potential as a variety for warm dry areas where it can produce straw-yellow dry white wines.

What does Falanghina Taste like?

This is a dry white variety which has been described as having floral aromas and flavours of citrus, apples, peaches, almonds and fennel seeds.

Falanghina in Italy

There are in fact two distinct but similar white wine varieties with this name. Until the 1970s they were considered the same variety.  Falanghina Beneventana and Falanghina Flegrea, both originated in Campania in Southern Italy, and there still is some confusion among viticulturists and winemakers about which is which.  Some Falanghina is grown in the neighbouring Puglia and Molise regions, but it seems that little is grown outside Southern Italy.

Falanghina makes dry white wines and occasionally passito and sparkling wines.  In Campania, wines made from Flegrea  are generally considered superior.

Falanghina In Australia

There are just a few producers of Falanghina in Australia This far, but there is considerable enthusiasm for the variety. Two wines from this variety, from Chalmers and Olivers Tarango  won silver medal at the 2024 AAVWS. It is still early days and it seems there will be more to come.

What food goes with falanghina

Judy Kelly of Artwine in the Adelaide Hills says

This wonderful Italian variety offers soft peach and zesty citrus and notes of almonds, all of which call for a seafood and pasta dish. A delicious pairing is with a prawn linguine topped with fresh lemon and parsley.
